ATHENS VILLAGE, LOS ANGELES COUNTY — October 31, 2026. Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation has outlined new safety improvements for the playground at Athens Park, 12603 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90061, a neighborhood gathering place in the historic Athens Village area.
In a filing received August 11, 2026, the state environmental clearinghouse describes a project to install new play equipment and other park amenities to improve conditions and safety in the existing play area. The agency determined the proposal qualified for a categorical exemption from environmental review under specified CEQA regulations.
What is—and isn’t—confirmed
The filing establishes the project’s scope and environmental classification. It does not give a verified October completion date, construction start date, or reopening schedule. Parents should not assume the new equipment is already installed or that any part of the playground is presently closed.
Athens Park’s wider facilities include ball fields, a gym, a swimming pool, and community rooms, and the county’s public locator lists recreation programming there. The work is aimed at the playground rather than a wholesale redevelopment of the entire park.
For current access and programs, the county’s park directory lists (323) 241-6700. Residents can ask staff about construction barriers and accessible equipment before visiting.
